Whitney Michelle Hall
Biography
b. 1986
Whitney Hall’s oil paintings combine the inspiration of the wild Northern Rockies and the intense color of the Southwest. Born and raised in San Diego, Whitney studied under a wide variety of contemporary California impressionists, expressionists, and colorists, focusing her studies mainly on figurative drawing and painting. After moving to Montana in 2008 she was introduced to Russian Impressionism and the Northern Rockies’ deep legacy of animal painting, which changed the course of her work from human to beast. Despite her four-legged subject matter, her approach is still figurative at its root, with a focus on the design and character of each animal she paints. Today her colorful animal compositions reflect this mixed art heritage with their constant push and pull between technique and intuition, form and expression, harmony and contrast.
In 2010 Whitney was the youngest artist to be juried into the C.M. Russell Art Auction. In 2011, she was published in Southwest Art Magazine as one of “21 Under 31: Young Artists to Collect Now” and received the Award of Excellence in the Oil Painters of America’s 2011 Western Regional Exhibition. In 2019 she received the prestigious 2-Dimensional Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale and in the same auction her painting was the second-highest selling piece of the night, coming in at over three times retail. Her work has since been juried into many national shows and auctions, including the Russell Auction, the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, the Coors Western Art Show, and multiple museum shows.
Statement
I started out my art studies as a figurative artist, but over time I discovered that I can tell much deeper stories with animals. There is a sort of universal emotional language in nature that can be harder to access with humans subjects. But I still bring the same fascination with anatomy and movement to my nature paintings that first drew me to studying the figure.
Animals, birds, and plants fill our stories, poems, mythologies, and even sports teams and company logos. I don’t think I will ever get tired of exploring the infinite variety of colors, shapes, and expressions I find in nature.
I also bring to my paintings a lifelong obsession with color theory. The same math that runs through music and science runs through color, and color can both reflect and affect our emotions in amazing ways. I spend a lot of time composing the palette for each piece, and am always exploring new ways to combine and showcase color.
Process
I mostly work in oil media for my larger pieces and layered resin for my smaller pieces.
For my large pieces, I will use a combination of materials including oil, cold wax, metallic media, drawing media like oil crayons and oil sticks, and even paper or collage backgrounds. In addition to brushes, I love using anything that can give me an interesting texture - rollers, squeegees, pieces of cardboard, cheap torn hardware store brushes, wire brushes meant for charcoal grills, and sometimes even my own gloved hand.
For my smaller resin pieces, I will layer up to 12 layers of archival fine art resin with collage materials, drawings, paintings, colored pencil, inks, resin dyes, or anything else that strikes my fancy! By sanding each layer in between I can use pretty much any medium I choose, but the catch is that I can barely see the layers underneath. This means that each time I pour another layer of resin the painting is a new surprise.
A huge focus in the way I choose to combine media for each piece is to give a sense of movement and interactivity. Abstract application gives the painting a sense of emergence, and the layered media and metallics will seem to shift in color and the light will reflect differently as the viewer walks by. Pieces that hang in a home will take on a slightly different character all day long as the light in the room changes, so that a pieces becomes a living element in the environment like a mirror or a glass sculpture.
My work, no matter the size, is all about the interplay between harmonious colors and rich textures and patterns.
